The lowest that Suwon have ever finished overall in a K-league season... they're 6th now: Pohang 27 (+5) Chonbuk 22 (+7) Ulsan 21 (+3) Seoul 20 (+4) Gwangju 19 (0) Suwon 18 (+1) Busan 18 (0) Seongnam 16 (-5) Chunnam 15 (+4) Daejeon 15 (-2) Daegu 13 (-1) Bucheon 13 (-5) Incheon 12 (-10) It's also 20 months since their last trophy (FA Cup, December 2002)... the longest spell since winning the 2nd league section in November 1996 and winning the actual K-league title in October 1998... Sort it out, Cha!

Aye, also meant to say that 5th is the lowest they've ever finished in one half of a split league section too...
You've got standards to keep up, Mrs. Cha!

Didnt they win the Asian Champions League thingy two years running? How did they manage that finishing third in the K-League?

1998 title got them into the 1999/2000 Champions Cup where they were semi-finalists, then winning the 1999 title got them into the 2000/01 competition which they won. They went back in 2001/02 as holders and retained it, but because the AFC changed the tournament into the Asian Champions League for 2003 Suwon weren't able to defend their crown and Seongnam went instead as champions (along with Daejeon as FA Cup holders - they'd finished bottom of the K-league too!).
Interesting stuff, huh?

Were you around in time for Suwon's second Champions Cup win HJ? Far less impressive than the first. Basically mudwrestling in the Azadi and a penalty shootout against Anyang in the final. Probably wouldn't have gone that far only for Andre Santos (the best player on the pitch) getting the line shortly before half-time for a lunge from behind on Lee Byung-keun. The first indication that Andre had a wee bit of a temper - the next coming when he decided Kim Nam-il's face could do with rearranging courtesy of a loaf in the gob.

I arrived in Korea five days after the final, it seems... so missed out on all the fun. I remember following the Asian Super Cup that year though. Actually for the first month I arrived here I don't remember doing anything else football-wise other than trying to work out the logistics of getting to the Scotland match in Busan in May 2002... then wished I'd never bothered going Ach well, looks like Berti Vogts is getting the dunt soon... bet he wishes he hadn't turned down that reported approach from the KFA back in June

I was in Anyang at the time of the penalty shootout loss to Suwon. I remember seeing it on TV live and wondering who these teams were. Then I saw that one of them was Anyang and though "that's weird, my crappy 'little' city actually has a really good football team". Well I guess you would have had to have rated them decent to be in the Asian club final. So a while later I worked out where they played and toddled off to watch them in the rain on my own. They were playing Suwopn and there was a pretty big crowd. Can't really remember the result but it was the start of a short, beautiful and frustrating relationship that ended with the bride (Anyang Cheetahs) being murdered by her parents. Possibly because of their marriage with me.

That's got me thinking, what was my first Suwon game? It must have been Suwon v Seongnam in July 2002, as I recall going to that game with koreadon... it ended 2-2, and Sasa Drakulic scored twice for Seongnam to cancel out a goal from Sandro and an own-goal (thanks to RSSSF for filling in those missing details ). I made an abortive attempt to go to Seongnam v Pohang on the opening day of that season, but arrived at the ground almost at kick-off time to find the game bloody sold out!

Sheesh we really are going back a bit now! And to think they didn't even have any nat. team players either. Was there a moonie convention an hour earlier down the road? Were there several thousand bride and grooms in the crowd by any chance? Yep, I remember around WC time before and after that you had to get to Anyang 30 minutes before kickoff at least to make sure you could get in. That went on for about 4 or 5 games maybe. Ah the nostalga as a tear rolls down his cheek while he sits here listening to Korean hip hop.

Quite funny to look at the attendances from 2002...
These are from the final round of the Adidas Cup on 1st May:
Group A Suwon 1-2 Pohang (18,107) Bucheon 2-2 Seongnam (13,127) Group B Anyang 0-0 Ulsan (3,429) Busan 2-0 Daejeon (3,315)
and these are the opening attendances in the K-league for each club that season (in July):
Seongnam 3-2 Pohang (29,120) Busan 1-2 Ulsan (39,427) Chonbuk 2-1 Anyang (31,520) Chunnam 1-0 Taejon (23,122) Suwon 2-1 Ulsan (30,300) Ulsan 0-0 Chonbuk (39,242) Pohang 2-1 Busan (28,361) Taejon 1-1 Seongnam (18,450) Bucheon 1-0 Chunnam (31,127) Anyang 3-0 Suwon (21,294)
