Oops.
Who are the big name NZ players I might have heard of? For a while there was a pretty steady stream of NZ players linked with signing for Aberdeen....seemed like every second week we had a trialist or something over.
Never signed any though. Probably says a lot if you can't get a game for our mob.

There's a couple in the MSL.
One for the Galaxy and one for DC United. Sean Elliot and some other geezer.
Apart from that nobody really. Just a bunch of no names knocking about in shonky leagues in Europe.
Ivan Vicelich playing for one of the crap sides in the Dutch top flight.
Danny Hay played a bit for Leeds United a few years back.
I assume you have heard of Wynton Rufer though?
NZ's answer to Cha Boom!!!

I know Wynton Rufer made his name mostly in Germany. I even saw him play there for Werder Bremen. I don't think he did quite as well as Cha Boom, but he was Werder's top scorer at least once. He also played in Switzerland at Grasshoppers Zurich and then later in the J-League I think, although before I came here.
Don't remember the exact circumstances, but he tried to get taken on in England too. Before he ended up in Zurich he was either on loan or on some kinda trial with Norwich City but it never came off.
I never knew what his status was in NZ - unknown or hero? I would guess the latter. And what's he doing now?

Oh yeah..that guy Elliot at LA. Forgot about him. He was rubbish and the fans hated him That would confirm my suspicions Rufer is a bit of a hero in NZ. But not being a big 'soccer' country he isn't as well known as he would be if he'd done all that at rugger. I've looked at his achievements and they don't quite stack up to Cha Booms from memory. "The highlight of his career being the goal that won Werder Bremen the 1992 European CupWinner's Cup final. " "New Zealand striker Wynton Rufer has been acclaimed as the outstanding footballer of the century in the Oceania region. Rufer gained 62 votes in a recent poll of Oceania countries to win from Australian striker Frank Farina (41), French World Cup international Christian Karembeu (New Caledonia 40), Joe Marston (Australia 34) and John Kosmina (Australia 33). Rufer, who starred with Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga, scored 186 goals in 453 top division appearances in four countries. He was a member of the New Zealand team which qualified for the 1982 World Cup finals in Spain and was a three-time winner of the Oceania Footballer of the Year Award." interestingly there's a german guy in my social team who has met him a couple of times and he's talked about what an amazing guy he is. Rufer is a hardcore christian and runs coaching clinics and some organisation in NZ these days.

Soccer: Nelsen offered Blackburn contract - reports
16.12.04 1.00pm All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen has been offered a permanent contract with English Premier League soccer club Blackburn Rovers, according to newspaper reports.
The Lancashire Evening Telegraph reported yesterday Blackburn manager Mark Hughes would sign the former Christchurch United defender.
Blackburn Rovers would "complete the free transfer signing" of Nelsen when the English transfer window opened on January 1, the newspaper reported.
"(Nelsen) has made enough of an impression during a two-week trial to persuade Hughes to offer him a permanent contract," it said.
Nelsen's United States-based agent, Lyle Yorks, was quoted in radio reports today as saying details still needed to be worked out - including Nelsen's UK work permit - before a deal was signed.
Nelsen officially ends his four-year contract with the Washington club, DC United, on December 31.
He recently captained United to their fourth Major League Soccer championship in nine seasons and the defender was also named in the league's 11 for the second consecutive year.
Nelsen will become the first New Zealander to sign for an English Premier League club since fellow All Whites centre-back Danny Hay left Leeds United in 2002.
The Telegraph quoted Hay as backing his compatriot to be a big success at Ewood Park.
"He’s a top player who has been doing very well at DC United," Hay said.
"It's now or never for him at 27, and I think with the side Blackburn has at the moment, he's got a good show of playing regularly."
Blackburn are struggling this season, with just two wins from 17 matches to sit 18th on the league table, ahead of just Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

Ryan Nelson is big news in New Zealand. Let's hope the FA give him a fair go and let him play! 2010 may be our year to shine!

Not if he's smart. That's like commiting career suicide on this board isn't it, NJ?

Not if he's smart. That's like commiting career suicide on this board isn't it, NJ? Well supporting a relocated team that gets less rabid support now than it used to is a bit of a punch in the guts to the fans not to mention the sport itself. One of the reasons why they just didn't capture the public in Seoul is cos they are a f**ken fraud.

Believe it or not I understand. About 13 years ago Minnesota lost the Northstars (our hockey team.) They went to Dallas, had a decent following, (in a state that doesn't know f@#k all about hockey,) won the Stanley Cup. It took 10 years or so before we got a team back.
Needless to say I'm still bitter. And yes the hockey lockout right now sucks.
Ok I'll get off the soap box now.

I wonder what's happening with the Seoul United team? Haven't heard anything about them for months really.

I wonder what's happening with the Seoul United team? Haven't heard anything about them for months really. Up to fifty Seoul United fans are going to Busan tomorrow in a big display of support for the team ("up to fifty", because that's how many of these t-shirts they made muhaha) As for the club, I don't know whether they're planning on a 2006 start instead. Incheon United had their shit in gear a lot earlier than late-December - they had Werner Lorant in place by September 2003 and everything was progressing at a much faster rate. In fact, there's an article on their website that seems to suggest they'll join in 2006 instead...
