The national football team left for Vietnam on Sunday night ahead of Wednesday¡¯s World Cup qualifier, but will have to do without the services of veteran defender Yoo Sang-chul who picked up an injury playing for the Yokohama Marinos in the J.League.
Yoo, who was supposed to join the team in Vietnam along with teammate Ahn Jung-hwan and Cho Jae-jin of Shimizu S-Pulse, fractured a rib during Saturday¡¯s J.League clash against the Urawa Reds when he collided with defender Alpay Ozalan, the Turkish international who started the season with the K-League¡¯s Incheon United but was dealt to the Reds in June.
With the loss of Yoo there are only four defenders available to the team _ Choi Jin-cheul and Park Jae-hong of Chonbuk Motors, Lee Min-sung of Pohang Steelers and Kim Chi-gon of FC Seoul. Cho Byung-kuk of the Suwon Blue Wings was replaced by Kim after injuring his ankle during a K-League match last week.
The injury to the team captain is a harsh blow to the backline that has put in poor performances at both the Asian Cup and Athens Olympics as both teams tumbled at the quarterfinal stage.
The rest of the team will unpack at the Equator Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City and will start training from Monday morning.
South Korea currently tops the Group 7 standings with seven points from three matches. Lebanon is next with six points and Vietnam are third with three points.
In their first meeting South Korea scored a 2-0 win on June 6 in Taejon with goals from Ahn Jung-hwan and Kim Du-hyun.
The game will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday (KST).
