Not a great performance at all, the Vietnam game, and certainly a few things, especially at the back that need some attention. But at the end of the day, it was the result needed.
Look at it this way, at the same time in the same competition on the other side of the world, England were also away to a team ranked similarly by FIFA to Vietnam, Austria, and by the way they played seemingly rightly so. England did not get the 3 points Korea got. Not a perfect comparison, of course, but it may be good to remember that lots of international teams sometimes struggle against opposition you might expect them to hammer. Hell, I think there are even national teams in Europe who've had trouble with the likes of the Faroes!!

True enough, but the national team has been churning out some less than impressive results (0-0 Jordan, 1-1 Trinidad & Tobago, 0-0 Maldives in the last six months) along with pretty poor performances and that's giving a wee bit cause for concern, especially with a potentially tough final qualifying group ahead.

i think there are tremendous amount of skill difference between asia and europe. The only countries that are decent in football are ROK, japan, and Iran (Mediocre), however, comparing ROK vs Vietnam and ENG vs austria is little off cuz the fact the austria would beat vietnam by good five goals
ps.
hyoung myung bo needs to come out of retirement. I went to see him play in america and he is still the might giant back there
forever korea

Think he's heading into coaching and no doubt will get the NT job one day regardless of whether he's good or not Give him the Suwon job I say.

But the poor teams of Europe are no longer as far ahead of the middling ones of Asia as they used to be or as some still think. I said it wasn't an ideal comparison but I really disagree that you can just assume Austria would've hammered Vietnam; sure, I'd expect them to beat them, but Austria looked to me a very, very poor team (which tallies with their FIFA ranking) and I'd not be all that astounded to see them slip up against a middle ranking Asian team, like Vietnam. Holyjoe, agreed that the national team have had a few less than inspiring performances over the last year or so. Although, they haven't really played many teams against whom a victory would get them many plaudits anyway; they've mostly just had the banana skins, of which, as you say, a few haven't been dealt with very well. The Maldives game is the outstanding embarrassment obviously. Whilst 0-0 v Jordan is never one I'd describe as a good result, it was only one of 3 group games, and Jordan looked a reasonable side in that tournament - they were damn unlucky not to get past Japan in the QF. Another thing, everyone is talking about concern of the tougher next stage, seemingly assuming that they're there already. They really only need to avoid defeat in Lebanon, but Lebanon are on a bit of a roll and Korea are the opposite at the moment....so I hope not but.....can't totally put that nasty thought out my mind. Interestingly, Japan are in a similar position in their qualifying group. They need to avoid defeat in Oman. They should do it, but Oman are one of the better middle eastern teams whom Japan very luckily beat 1-0 at home, ditto in the Asian Cup so maybe Oman are due one to go their way. If so, it's down to goal difference, which is very close. It'd be disastrous for the region if it happened, but there is a slight possibilty that both its top team might fail to make the 2nd stage of the qualifiers. Hey, I'd better stop now!!

I think the reason that we're getting ahead of ourselves and thinking about the next stage is because failure to reach that would then really confirm a problem with the national set-up and dwarf what we've been going on about before...

does anyone know how much bonfere is getting paid annually? if so, i can't seem to understand why they did not get the girly french guy that lead the senegalese team to quater finals of the world cup in 2002. KfA get annually 36 millions dollars from nike on KFA endorsements. What do they do with the money. Buy soju and kimchee all they long. I bet my money it is corrupted just like the korean govts.

You're talking about Bruno Metsu, who was in fact, the fist choice to take the most recent job opening; They offered him a pile of cash, but he didn't take it. they actually offered that job to a lot of really big names, but none of them took it. Bonefrere is apparently the best who would come; I have no doubts that he will be replaced soon, because after all, who can ever match what Hiddink did?

I think the proposed police crackdown on room salons and other related establishments may mean they'll need to find something else to spend their money on in future... Bonfrere got the job pretty much because he was available and... er, available. They needed a coach ASAP for the Asian Cup and lo and behold Goldmember was there to take over.

I read about the hiring of Bonfrere in the Korea Times sometimes ago. it was a disgrace (according to the news). Huh Jung Mo was the one who engaged Bonfrere and Bonfrere in turn made Huh Jung Mo his assistant coach. so it is a case of I HIRE YOU AND YOU HIRE ME.
