>:(What kind of defender is this -----> Lee Min Sung? Over the years, I've seen this Lee Min Sung playing for Korea and I've never seen him played well ever since his goal against Japan in 1997. Because of him, we lost our semi-final against Germany as a result of poor marking and his out of position. His presence for the national team's backline resulted in our elimination in this years Asian Cup against the Iranians. If you have the videos of the past games that Lee Min Sung played in, you'll know how bad our defence was whenever this player appeared for Korea. He simply doesn't fit well for the national team. He only brings shame to the country. Why is he always chosen by the coach for important games? LEE MIN SUNG is one of the lousiest defenders Korea has ever produced. We definitely do not need him!!! We need someone like Hong Myungbo, Choi Jincheul or Song Jongkook to guard our defensive line. Even younger defenders like Cho Byungkook is much better than Lee Minsung. So please Jo Bonfrere, kick him out of the squad or you'll regret later. Please do it before it's too late. Lee Min Sung sucks!!! Most of my friends agree!!! LEE MIN SUNG is a disgrace to Korean Football!!!

Well my wife also has a severe dislike for the guys ability as well. I can't tell his fluck ups from the rest of the defenders fluck ups half the time to be honest.
I wouldn't expect him to be replaced by Hong Myung-bo though. The guy has retired.

Lee Min Sung is pretty solid as a defensive mid-fielder.
But the problem is, we got 2 guys who can play that role very well in Kim Nam IL and Lee Eul Yong (Lee EY is also a decent winger so beeeh...)

You're right about Lee Min Sung being weak recently, but you can't blame all the defensive faults on him. The entire defense line has been awful for the past year.
Unfortunately, the players you name to replace him aren't good choices: Hong Myungbo is retired, as NJS said; Choi Jincheul is old and on the way to retirement himself(he's made some big mistakes recently too); Son Jonggook is a midfielder, not a defender (Winning Eleven is mistaken) and Cho Byungkook is already on the national team playing as a defender.

The problem is South Korea plays well in a 3 back, when the players we have is suited best for 4 back. Song on the right, Lee Young-pyo on the left, Cho Byung-guk plus one other dude in the middle. We just have to figure out how to make it work!!! Lee Young-pyo and Song Jung-guk are excellent wing backs/wide backs. 4-3-3. How about it?.

I took jaeson's post as suggesting that someone in the mould of Hong Myungbo (or the other players mentioned ) was what was needed. I might be wrong, but I doubt that someone who's been following the fortunes of the national team since at least 1997 needs to be told that Hong Myungbo retired.
I think it is fair to pick out Lee Min Sung. As the OP said, he has been consistently poor, not just for the odd game, but going back several years now. That's not to say that there aren't others who've been fortunate to keep getting picked. I'm not sure what the best defensive combination is though.
BTW, Song Jong-Guk is indeed usually regarded as a midfielder, but that doesn't necessarily mean he couldn't play a defensive role.

Actually putting Song and Lee YP on the wings is something I've been pushing for some time. That's where they play for the Feyenoord and PSV so why not with the national team. The benefit to the backline will outweigh the loss to the midfield, especially with some decent youngsters coming up - Kim Dong-jin, Kim Du-hyun. With those two guys back there it makes the flanks more movable on attack and going back - think a little like the way Roberto Carlos plays but with some actual defense. Korea general attacks along the wings anyways so this should strengthen the team. Still the problem is with the central defenders. There are young guys but they just don't have the coaching from HS on up into the K-League. I suppose Cho BK is the best option. Sabitovic thinks highly of him, so maybe there is something there. Short term I suppose keep old man Choi who may benefit from actually suiting up beside fellas that can play. Also this should free up Yoo Sang-chul who really belongs in midfield and can lead in the center where they are really hurting as well. Up front you just have to rotate with the likes of Cha, Seol, Ahn, Lee CS and Choi Sung-gook. Bring in some other guys depending on opposition. If the defense is bad with headers maybe Cho Jae-jin but probably not otherwise. Bonfrere has said recently that he wants to bring in the younger guys but I don't believe he will ``IF'' Korea get to the second round of qualifying.

I mean we need someone having Hong Myungbo's caliber. I don't mean we need to recall Hong back. He's old and retired. What I mean is that we have to tell Jo Bonfrere to kick Lee Min Sung out of the national squad. Moreover Lee Min Sung is aging now (already 31). i guess Bonfrere is still not familiar with Korean players yet. Hopefully he can realize soon that something must be done to improve the weak defense.

Song Jongkook is originally a defender although he also play a role in the midfield sometimes. I think he's a good candidate for the role as a central defender together with a younger player like Cho Byungguk. I agree with some of you guys that Lee Young Pyo and Lee Eul Yong should be wingbacks. Any other suggestion? please give your views. We have some youngsters like Kim Du Hyun and Kim Dong Jin, who will be playing important roles for Korea in the next 7 to 10 years. I'm not so worry about our midfield and forwards when we have other experienced young players like Park Ji Sung, Cha Doo Ri or Lee Chun Soo. I'm more worried about our defense.

I would imagine that Kwak Hee-ju might end up in a national team squad soon if he keeps playing in the Suwon first team... Jo Byung-guk should become a national team mainstay in the not-too-distant, and Cho Sung-hwan will add to his Vietnam cap from last year if he can start getting some consistency into his game.

Hey guys, how do you think about Park Yong Ho of FC Seoul? He's one of the fine young defenders in the country besides Cho Byung Guk.

Hey guys, how do you think about Park Yong Ho of FC Seoul? He's one of the fine young defenders in the country... grrrrrrrr, don't mention that name to me!!!! Well he's not a bad footballer and I'm sure he'll get better but I stood behind him (in the stands) for about 20 games last season and witnessed inumerable f**k-ups by him and his mates. Anyang had about the 2nd worst defense in the competition last year and he was one reason why. I noticed on another thread that he's playing for the reserves now. He's decent in the air and scores the odd goal through attacking free-kicks or corners which is always a good little string to your bow. But he's probably a fair bit of coaching and a few more seasons away from being near the national team. Maybe 2010 WC.

Well Lee Min-sung didn't look too impressive in the game against Suwon today... but he'll be in the Maldives squad when it's announced no doubt.
