The Korean Football Association (KFA) announced the list of the 20 members of the national football team for the 2006 World Cup¡¯s Asian region qualifying match against Maldives to be held Nov. 17 in Seoul.
Two young defenders _ Kim Jin-kyu of Chunnam Dragons and Kim Chi-gon of FC Seoul _ rejoined the squad, while striker Cho Jae-jin of Shimizu S-Pulse also was called up by head coach Jo Bonfrere after missing the Lebanon match last month due to injury. But Lee Min-sung of Pohang Steelers, Park Dong-hyuk of Chonbuk Motors, Cho Byung-kook of Suwon Blue Wings, Chung Kyung-ho of Ulsan Tigers and Trabzonspor¡¯s Lee Eul-yong were excluded from the new entry.
Kim Jin-kyu played for the national team at the Asian Cup in July, but was suspended for two matches by the Asian Football Confederation for an obscene gesture during the quarterfinal match against Iran. Last month, he led the U-20 team as the captain to capture the AFC Youth Championship title.
Kim Chi-gon and Cho Jae-jin, who played in the U-23 team at the Athens Olympics, were promoted before September¡¯s World Cup qualifier against Vietnam but didn¡¯t play in the game.
The team will start training on Thursday at the National Football Center in Paju, Kyonggi Province, but seven foreign-based players are expected to join the workouts after next weekend, leaving them only three days to prepare with their teammates.
Lee Young-pyo and Park Ji-sung of PSV Eindhoven are to play an Eredivisie match against Willem II on Saturday. Lee Chun-soo of Numancia has a Primera Liga game with Sevilla, and Seol Ki-hyeon¡¯s Wolverhampton in the English League Championship will play Rotherham on the same day.
Three J-Leaguers _ Ahn Jung-hwan and Yoo Sang-chul of Yokohama Marinos and Cho Jae-jin of Shimizu S-Pulse _ will play in Emperor¡¯s Cup games on Saturday.
Song Chong-gug of Dutch side Feyenoord is likely to be the only foreign-based player who will be in Paju on Thursday, as he is suspended for three games in the Dutch league for a red card.
Currently South Korea leads Group 7 with a record of three wins and two draws for 11 points, just ahead of Lebanon with 10. The team likely require a win over Maldives to reach the final stage, as Lebanon are expected to beat Vietnam in their final match.
In March¡¯s away match in Maldives, South Korea was held to a humiliating scoreless draw by the 142nd-ranked minnows, who are now in a upbeat mood after beating Vietnam 3-0 last month.
The game starts at 8 p.m. at Seoul¡¯s Sangam World Cup Stadium.
