Assistant coach of the national football team Huh Jung-moo resigned from the position Thursday, ending his controversial five-month appointment by head coach Jo Bonfrere.
"From the beginning, I have thought it is my duty to help Bonfrere adapt to Korean football. And now I think he is able to lead the team in his own way without my help," Huh said at a news conference at the Korean Football Association¡¯s headquarters in central Seoul. "I have supported him and have given advice, and now my job is done."
Huh said that he didn¡¯t discuss with Bonfrere in person about quitting. Bonfrere is currently in Hong Kong for the renewal of his work visa.
"Since he is a foreigner I couldn't tell him directly (due to language differences). I told the KFA and they translated it to him," said the 49-year-old, adding that it is just a coincidence that he is quitting while the Dutchman is not in Korea.
Bonfrere was unavailable for comment, and the KFA also refused to pass on his reaction at the news conference.
Huh, who himself was fired from the head coaching job four years ago, was the head of the KFA's technical committee when it appointed Bonfrere as national team coach in June. A few days later Huh was named as the assistant coach, raising controversy from the media and football fans that someone was in charge of the selecting process should not join the coaching staff.
Huh was also often blamed for overstepping Bonfrere's authority in coaching the team, and reportedly has disagreements with the head coach while the team continued to suffer to disappointing performances in the Asian Cup and the World Cup qualifiers over last five months.
"If there is some problems between a coach and his assistant, than it is the assistant whom should be blamed, not the head coach," Huh said. "But for me and Bonfrere there was no bad feelings. It is a misunderstanding of the media."
Huh said he would like to coach a K-League team, but denied that he is close to a deal.
