Benin's junior 'keeper Yessouffo "Campos" Semiou was stabbed dead after his team's embarrassing 3-0 defeat to local rivals Nigeria in the opening match of the African Youth Championship, officials said.
"The goalkeeper died ... this morning in the hospital in Cotonou. He died from injuries he sustained during the attack by an unidentified fan," said Suleiman Habuba, spokesman for the Confederation of African Football.
The 19-year-old was stabbed late Sunday in Cotonou and taken to hospital where he died from his injuries, Beninese medical sources confirmed.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter sent his condolences.
"It was with utter horror and sadness that I learned of the death of Yessouffo Semiou, better known as 'Campos', the young goalkeeper from your national youth team, in circumstances which, if the latest reports are true, beggar belief," he said in a statement.
On Saturday the host nation had a difficult match against neighbouring Nigeria in the first group match on the continental tournament, when Semiou had had to pick the ball out of his net three times in front of an angry crowd.
In a telephone interview Habuba told AFP that CAF president Isa Hayatu was shocked and disturbed by the incident and condemned violence in sport.
Some of Semiou's teammates from the "Squirrels" national squad told AFP that he had left the team hotel, the Eldorado at around nine'o'clock on Sunday night and that he had not been seen since.
Semiou who played for the northern league team Les Buffles was a a respected young player and considered a rival for Chitou Rachad to hold the Number One jersey in the Squirrels' full international side.
