Tempted to go shopping before I leave Korea and think some CD/DVD purchasing might be in order.
Anyone recommend some 'must buy' Korean movies/CDs??
Are there any 'real' Korean bands or is everything just crap pop designed for 12 year old girls and sung by Ahn Jung Hwan clones?

bands seo taiji (his latest one) nell (sound like radiohead back a few years) peter pan complex (sound like a crappy version of nell) rollercoaster (elevator music but sounds alright) jaurim (anything) - it's a chick singing, actually very good pia (hard rock, played support for linkin park for a few of their gigs) diablo (death metal more or less) with the exception of rollercoaster and jaurim I've seen all of them live several times. my other korean cds are all hip hop most my korean dvds are'nt really that good. But I bought them for posterity

Righty I'll check them out...
Nell, Pia and Diablo sound promising from some cursory investigation. Not sure about Rollercoaster. Couldn't find the others yet.
Shopping trip tomorrow....there used to be a cute girl in the Sinchon Synnara that I had planned to ask but shes always missing now... not asking a bloke!!
Musicland (thats the right name, right?) in Jongno is alright but the staff are always ajummas!

Steve, The best music shop in Seoul is a little place called "Hyang" abou 150 yards from the front gate of Yonsei University. It's on your left if you're going toward the uni from the subway. If they don't have it, no-one in Korea has. Music - I'd definitely go along with the Seo Taiji recommendation, any of his last three albums. Also, if you're into loud stuff, X-Japan or Crash could be no harm. Or Crying Nut. Films - Old Boy, Memories of Murder, Nowhere to Hide (ÀÎÁ¤ »çÁ¤ º¼ °Í ¾ø´Ù), or anything by Lee Chang-dong, Im Kwon-taek or Kim Ki-duk.
Hope that helps.

I live just round there.....oh, is that the one on the main road leading from Sinchon Stn to Yonsei (the road with McDs, Nike etc) I saw that place a few times but I always assumed the small places were more expensive. Most of em dont even price their stuff and I can't be bothered asking. I need cheap stuff cos I'm a poor student.

That's the place. I never really compared the prices - loadsamoney, me. Well, not really, but when I was a student living in Shinchon, I didn't buy music with my beer money, so I don't know what the cheap music shops are. These days, I usually go to Hyang when I want imported stuff, which I just asssume costs more anyway.

Oh I forgot. Korea actually has a really big underground punk music scene and many of the groups are very good.
and I was an extra in that 2009 lost memories movie and reckon it's awful.

yeah cos I got cut!!
The small music stores can often be cheaper than the larger ones. Certainly no more expensive and they are generally more friendly, knowledgeable and in need of your won.

good lad.
I just got back from France where I bought a hip hop compilation which has turned out to be heavy RnB basically.
And I say "dogs balls" to RnB!!!!
The bloody MTV we got on cable in our hotel was out of Berlin and they played the usual western pop music interspersed with awful german rock music. At least they don't seem to have much in the way of boy and girl bands though. Also a laugh watching Jackass and Pimp My Ride as well.
