We're crapping our pants at this level. When's the last time that happened? What a disgrace. Yes, but that situation isn't ONLY due to the bad result in the Maldives, it's also due to the qualifying system where only 1 team advances to the next stage. As well as that, the standard of Asian football generally has advanced a lot in the last few years. I don't think Korea are a worse team than they were the last time they had to qualify, but the middle ranking Asian teams have got a lot closer. It does make for an anxious time, but I don't see it as a disgrace for Korea that other teams have got better. Anyway, as I mentioned on another thread, Japan are actually in the same boat as Korea - they also have to avoid defeat in the Middle East. Japan are away to Oman, and although their recent form is better than Korea's, most would say they also have the trickier away fixture to negotiate this week. To end on a gloomy note, has anyone noticed how history seems to have not been very kind to teams getting 4th place at World Cup finals? 1990 England - didn't qualify next time; 1994 Bulgaria - qualified in 1998 but performed abysmally including a 1-6 hammering by Spain; 1998 Holland - didn't qualify next time. 2002 Korea -

england not going to usa '94 was nothing to do with anything other than a certain 'do i not like that' person. i think korea have genuine reason for concern for tonights match. i hope they make it so there will be more international matches in the second qualifying group. hopefully in the warm up they can attract someone bigger than bulgaria this time.

Maldives 3-0 Vietnam
What price Korea getting a draw out of tonight and then screwing up again against the Maldives?

1-1 at halftime. Phenomenal goal from Choi Jin-chol followed up by some phenomenally bad defending to let Lebanon back into it. Lebanon looked tight at the back with Korea not really being able to get any good chances with the goal coming out of nothing. If the second half goes like the first then anything could happen. Could Korea be about to screw things up royally once and for all and miss out on Germany altogether? I expect not but it's looking tight. and the missus has fallen asleep in front of the tv. riveting stuff

finished 1-1 so Korea have to beat the Maldives in Korea.
They should hammer the crap out of them, but with their skill/luck in front of goal maybe they'll just spend 90 minutes hitting the posts and the goalkeepers body.
Still can't understand how they can't score.
They get so much ball and creata so much space and can shake off their markers with ease, and can get so much ball into the box and then still manage to either not get a shot off or just plow it straight at a defender or else into the stands.

Well....look at the k-league. You could take the keepers away and still get 3 0-0 draws a week. someone must be coaching these guys to mess up??

Yep, but the difference is that the domination that the national side has in most games in general play is far greater the domination that even the strongest K-League side can get over the weakest team. Lebanon would be roughly akin to Bucheon on what I saw. They couldn't string together 2 passes or more all night. They would send the ball into touch when it was meant as a pass, or their other passes never got near their man. The second they got the ball they gave it away. The only time they got in Koreas half was when they punted it down there. Their defence was pretty solid but by the last 30 Korea was just opening them up like a can of sardines. And they still can't score. Mind you they hit the post once and had the keeper pull off a great save with his legs. and the Maldives must be about Uijongbu's level

Maldives is on 17th November, there's nothing on the KFA website yet to say where it's going to be played. I guess they were waiting to see whether it was going to be an important match or not before deciding... so no doubt it'll be at Sangam now. Korea should have won comfortably last night, had enough chances to win 3-1 or 4-1 but there's no bugger there to put the ball in the net! Ahn Jung-hwan was guilty of wanting to be a hero too often (though unlucky to hit the bar), too often he tried to do the fancy stuff and ran into defenders... but then with the lack of a body there to convert the chances I guess he didn't have much option. Lee Chun-soo had a decent game but then there was no-one getting on the end of what he supplied so it was all for nothing. There's just a lack of Koreans who can finish on a regular basis really... even looking at the K-League top scoring list it's (as usual) chock-full of foreigners: 5. Kim Eun-joong (7 from 18) 7. Woo Sung-yong (6 from 17) 11. Park Jung-hwan (4 from 11) 16. Jin Soon-jin (4 from 14) 17. Shin Tae-yong (4 from 15) 18. Choi Tae-wook (4 from 16) 22. Kim Dong-jin (3 from 14) 23. Kim Byung-chae (3 from 15) 25. Lee Kwang-woo (3 from 15) Screw Koreanising defenders, they need to find Daegu's Nonato or Chunnam's Motta a Korean granny

Apparently Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Japan, Bahrain and Uzbekistan have all qualified. China/Kuwait, South Korea/Lebanon, Iran/Jordan are the three other teams waiting to make it through. Final qualifying is based on seedings from around the time of the 2002 World Cup, which might keep Korea and Japan apart. South Korea v North Korea would be nice

Lee Kwang-woo (3 from 15) that is pretty desperate if kim dong jin is 7th for overall korean scorer in the league. kim eun jung top korean? he took his goal well against incheon. still he was not too hot when he had a stab at the national team.
